Whether you dine out once a week or once a month, enjoy a fillet steak or a gourmet burger, prefer some pakora or mushroom donburi – there’s something for everyone on the menu in Manchester.
By no means an exhaustive selection (we suggest you try as many as you can!), here’s our pick of the best places to eat in Manchester that we think will hit the mark with foodies everywhere. Some are well worth travelling for, so even if you’re based outside of Manchester, these restaurants will not disappoint.
The north’s branch of Mughli, otherwise known as the Charcoal Pit, has been around for over a quarter of a century. Located in the heart of Manchester’s ‘Curry Mile’ in Rusholme, it was recently acknowledged in The Telegraph as one of the best places to eat in Manchester. Consistently scoring high reviews from independent reviewers and celebrity chef’s alike (Matt Tebbutt has very high praise for Mughli), for both the quality and variety of the dishes served as well as the customer service, we think a dining experience that lets you watch your meal being prepped over an open charcoal pit just has to be sampled.
Having opened in 1990 by TV chef Simon Rimmer, Greens can be found in stylish West Didsbury. It has had a double AA rosette since 2000 and string of awards under its belt, undoubtedly making it one of the best places to eat in Manchester. Out of its kitchens comes fresh, inventive vegetarian dishes prepared to wow meat and non-meat eaters alike. Famous for its warm hospitality you can enjoy a starter of vegetarian black pudding and such delights as teriyaki mushroom donburi with sticky jasmine rice and kimchi as main, where do we book?
Almost Famous is so good they opened two in Manchester. If your idea of heaven is sinking your teeth into a juicy, sumptuous burger then we may have just found your ideal restaurant in Manchester! With burgers named after River Phoenix, Anna Nicole (Vegetarian option) and the Triple Nom featuring pulled pork, cheese Redneck BBQ and Famous sauce, expect an atmospheric dining experience right from the off. Be prepared to want to come back here again and again.
Style: Fine Dining
Here you’ll find luxury dining at its finest. Michelin starred The French was awarded one of the very first prestigious accolades back in 1974 and today sees diners enjoying unique cuisine that perfectly balances the heritage of the restaurant with the latest technological advances. Head chef Simon Rogan delivers an exciting menu created with the freshest, organic ingredients hand-picked from the restaurant’s personal farms throughout the north of England. For an opulent dining experience in Manchester, look no further than The French.
Take a stroll into Manchester’s ‘Little Italy’ and stop off at Ancoats for a truly unique pizza experience at Rudy’s. Earlier in the year this pizzeria was named ‘one of the best in the world’ so we couldn’t help but give it a mention. Rudy’s pizza dough is made on-site twice a day and is lusciously soft and floppy, never thin and crispy! Combinations of creamy Buffalo mozzarella, Napoli salami, N’duja sausage, wild broccoli and a variety of succulent olives means this pizzeria is a cut above your run-of-the-mill high street establishments. If you fancy something a little different, we recommend the Panuozzo – a warm sandwich made with pizza dough, look out for the specials.
At Try Thai, you’ll be treated to an authentic and atmospheric dining experience and some of the tastiest Thai food in Manchester. You’ll find this gem in the heart of Manchester’s Chinatown on Faulkner Street and it has been famously voted on many occasions as one of the top spots to enjoy Thai food. Sample the Try Thai Mango Crispy Seabass, Soft Shell crab with Chilly & Holly Basil or Crispy Duck with Tamarind Sauce to name but a few. With attentive and helpful service on hand you couldn’t get a more enjoyable foodie find.
With many of these fantastic restaurants offering a delivery service, you can even opt to have fine food served right from the comfort of your own home without you having to lift a finger.
